Original post December 23, 2006
It is crunch time now and I'm getting my application materials ready for Princeton, Luther, Fuller and Emory in about a week.  EmergingchurchDuke is a month later.  See my quick update about the Ph.D. here.
I would love it if any of you wanted to read my paper and give it some feedback.
The paper is about Bonhoeffer and the Emerging Church movement.  I think it is worthwhile stuff but I would appreciate your advice about things to change.  Not academic enough?  Work on the writing? Focus more?
I have attached it below.

Thanks so much.  Thanks for your prayers.  I hope you are well.  Merry Christmas.

Andy,

Hey. Got to your paper through a blogging friend named Chris. Don’t know if you know him or not…

At any rate I’m currently writing my dissertation on Bonhoeffer’s theological hermeneutics and have a great interest in the emerging church, as well.

Couple of friendly constructive criticisms:

1. You make a point of quoting Haynes who says that often people adopt DB because of his life rather than his writings. Your paper, however, has much more biographical info about DB rather than theological info. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, I just think you might want to delete the Haynes quote so that you won’t set yourself up for criticism. But more interaction with the primary DB texts can’t hurt.

2. If you can, check out DB’s essay entitled “On the Interpretation of New Testament Texts.” It has a very important passage about DB’s feelings on relevance.

I really enjoyed the paper. Good luck on your applications!

Andy,

I just skimmed parts of your paper, but noticed a mistake in the second last sentence of footnote 75, where Bonhoeffer is mentioned twice.

all the best, Mike
